Adding a Text Box

Dawn at Almost Ready Blogs gave me this code, and I’m going to share it with you (thank you thank you Dawn!). It’s perfect for posting your blinkie, along with the code for others to snag your blinkie as well.

The code is broken into two sections. The first section tells the website that you are creating an image (your blinkie) with a text box below it. The second section of code is for the blog reader to copy and paste the code to add your blinkie to their blog. Learn to make your own blinkie HERE.

The two sections of code are put together to add it to your blog.

Step 1 – Sample Code

Here is a sample code Dawn made for me. It would be used to 1) Add my blinkie and text area box and 2) allow others to copy and paste the code to snag my blinkie. Sometimes seeing the complete code helps you create your own.

<a href="http://easycustomblogs.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" title="Learn blog tips and tricks"><img src="http://upload1.scrapbookflair.com/scrapbooks/0/29/2975/o/297512_e3855300-be25-4f77-9f51-7e679b27ee5c_o.gif" border="0" width="200" height="75" alt="Easy Custom Blogs" /></a><br/><textarea rows="2" cols="22"><a href="http://easycustomblogs.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" title="Learn blog tips and tricks"><img src="http://upload1.scrapbookflair.com/scrapbooks/0/29/2975/o/297512_e3855300-be25-4f77-9f51-7e679b27ee5c_o.gif" border="0" width="200" height="75" alt="Easy Custom Blogs" /></a></textarea>

Here’s what it looks like:

Step 2 – Section ONE: Add your specific information. You can adjust the size of your text box here in this section of code by increasing/decreasing the width and/or the height.

<a href="YOUR BLOG ADDRESS OR URL" target="_blank" title="YOUR TAG LINE"><img src="YOUR BLINKIE IMAGE LINK" border="0" width="200" height="75" alt="YOUR BLOG NAME" /></a><br/><textarea rows="2" cols="22">

Step 3 – Section TWO (what will show in the box): Add your specific information about what will go into the text area box

<a href="YOUR BLOG URL OR ADDRESS" target="_blank" title="YOUR TAG LINE"><img src="YOUR BLINKIE IMAGE LINK" border="0" width="200" height="75" alt="YOUR BLOG NAME" /></a></textarea>

Step 4 – Put the two pieces of code together (with your specific information). It should look like this:

<a href="YOUR BLOG ADDRESS OR URL" target="_blank" title="YOUR TAG LINE"><img src="YOUR BLINKIE IMAGE LINK" border="0" width="200" height="75" alt="YOUR BLOG NAME" /></a><br/><textarea rows="2" cols="22"><a href="YOUR BLOG URL OR ADDRESS" target="_blank" title="YOUR TAG LINE"><img src="YOUR BLINKIE IMAGE LINK" border="0" width="200" height="75" alt="YOUR BLOG NAME" /></a></textarea>

Step 5 – Add the code to your blog.

Go to CUSTOMIZE/LAYOUT/PAGE ELEMENT/Add a GADGET

Select HTML/Java Script, and when the window pops up add the code from step 4.

Click the SAVE button.

Help others snag your blinkie!

So you want others to SNAG YOUR BLINKIE, and post your blinkie on their blog, AND you want to give directions for others to snag it. Let's start with first things first.

Step 1 - Create your blinkie
1. Create your blinkie. You can find some very simple directions here.

2. If you create your blinkie with Picason, then make sure to save your Image URL code. You will need this later. If you don't use Picason, then make sure to upload your image to a photo hosting site. See sidebar for some photo hosting site options.

Step 2 - Write a post
1. Write a post about snagging your blinkie. Back date if you want so that it's not on the front page of your blog. You can backdate a post by going to POST OPTIONS at the bottom of the gray bar around your post. There you can choose any date, past, present or future to post your blog. This is how bloggers pre-publish their blogs.
2. When you want to post HTML code on your blog, you have to substitute some of the code with a special combination of letters so that blogger doesn't freak out and delete your code or truncate (shorten) your code. For example it, you can't post a less than (<) or greater than (>) sign on blogger. Click here for a HTML site (chart is at the bottom) that has a lot of common code substitutions. I usually use the number substitution, but sometimes have to try different ones for the less than and greater than signs.

3. With the substitutions in place, you can copy and paste the following as your post:

Thanks for snagging my blinkie. To easily add my blinkie (with a link to my blog) to your blog, just go to your blog, and Select LAYOUT, then choose PAGE ELEMENTS. From there select ADD A GADGET. Add HTML/JavaScript, then input the following code:

PUT YOUR BLOG NAME HERE

3. After you have published your post, then click on the title of the post, and you will be directed by Blogger to that post. You will also see in your browser that your blog post has its own address line (link). Save that link, we will call this the DIRECTIONS TO SNAG MY BLINKIE LINK.

Step 3 - Post your blinkie on your site
1. Go to your blog, and Select LAYOUT, then choose PAGE ELEMENTS. From there select ADD A GADGET. You will choose add a picture as your option. The nice thing about Blogger is that now you can link your picture. For the LINK part, put in your DIRECTIONS TO SNAG MY BLINKIE LINK. For the IMAGE part, you will add your Blinkie Image URL or direct link from the web.

After this lesson you should be able to make your blinkie, post it to your blog (with your link) and give directions for others to snag your blinkie. As always, if you have any questions, just click on my "Contact Me" button in my header.

Let's Make a FREE Blinkie

Most photo editing software usually has some form of animation, even if it is limited. However, if you have software that doesn't (or you have NO IDEA about that), here's a simple way to make a blinkie.

1. Create your slides (the images for each "blink" of the blinkie). For this example I made 6. The typical blinkie is 150 x 50 pxl. You should work in 1500 x 500, and when you are finished resize to the 150 x 50. Save each file separately.

2. Go to Picasion. For this lesson I chose Picasion, because it is SUPER EASY!

3. Upload your images in the order you want them in the slide show. You may add up to 10 images.
4. After inserting all your images, click CREATE ANIMATION.
5. When your blinkie is finished, you can select a choice of Image URL or HTML Code to post on your blog. I prefer to select the Image URL code.
6. Go to CUSTOMIZE/LAYOUT/PAGE ELEMENTS/ADD A GADGET. Select HTML/Java Script. When the element pops up, just add or Image URL that you copied from the code.
7. IF YOU WANT TO ADD A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) like your blog address to the blinkie, then follow Step 6 and instead of choosing HTML/Java Script, select PICTURE. You can add your blinkie and the web address of your choice.

When you are finished, you have a BLINKIE!
